VDOT urges drivers to stay alert as students return to school

With more than a million students returning to classrooms across Virginia this month, the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) is reminding drivers to stay focused, especially around school buses and in school zones.

Children travel to school in a variety of ways — walking, biking, riding buses, or being driven — and their smaller size can make them harder to see. VDOT emphasizes that school buses are the safest method of transportation, but the moments when students are getting on or off are among the most vulnerable.

Virginia law requires all drivers to stop when a school bus has flashing red lights and an extended stop sign, regardless of the direction of approach, unless there is a physical median or barrier dividing traffic. Even in those exceptions, motorists should remain alert for children who may be crossing unexpectedly.

In addition, some local governments have installed speed cameras in school zones to enforce reduced speed limits during designated hours. These cameras are not installed by VDOT but can result in fines for violators.

Driver safety reminders:

School buses stop frequently; slow down and be patient. Yellow flashing lights mean the bus is preparing to stop. Red lights mean stop completely. Watch for students walking to or from stops, especially those running late who may enter the road without looking. Stay alert in the vicinity of schools during morning and afternoon hours. Avoid distractions such as mobile phones and keep your attention on the road.

Tips for parents and guardians:

Arrive at the bus stop at least five minutes early to avoid rushing. Stand at least five large steps back from the curb while waiting for the bus. Use sidewalks when available. If none, walk on the left side facing traffic. Cross streets at intersections or marked crosswalks only. Look left, right, and left again before crossing. Obey all crossing guards and pedestrian signals. Always look for traffic when exiting a school bus. Avoid distractions when walking, such as using phones or headphones.

VDOT reminds everyone that extra caution during school transportation hours can prevent serious injuries and save lives.
