AUGUSTA COUNTY, Va. — Virginia State Police is installing speed safety cameras in an Interstate 81 work zone in Harrisonburg, with a 30-day warning period set to begin Aug. 31.
The cameras will operate in both the northbound and southbound lanes between mile markers 242 and 247.
During the warning period, drivers caught exceeding the posted work zone speed limit will receive a warning rather than a citation. Virginia State Police will review each alleged violation before a warning or citation is issued.
After the 30-day warning period ends, the registered owner of a vehicle captured traveling at least 10 mph over the posted work zone speed limit may receive a $100 civil citation by mail.
The citation does not affect a driver’s criminal record or vehicle insurance, according to Virginia State Police.
Drivers who believe a citation was issued in error may contest it.
State police said the program is intended to reduce crashes and injuries in highway work zones by increasing awareness and encouraging compliance with posted speed limits.
Virginia State Police already operates speed safety cameras in two other Interstate 81 work zones: between mile markers 143 and 150 in Roanoke and Botetourt counties and between mile markers 221 and 225 in Augusta County.
