RICHMOND, Va. — Virginia Tourism Corporation has launched a new website designed to help travelers plan fall trips around changing foliage and seasonal attractions across the state.
The “Find Your Fall in Virginia” microsite combines foliage information with suggested scenic drives, hiking trails, wineries, family attractions and other fall destinations.
Virginia Tourism Corporation developed the site in partnership with the Virginia Department of Conservation and Recreation, Virginia Department of Forestry and U.S. Forest Service.
The interactive site includes regional trip ideas, suggested itineraries, scenic driving routes and maps intended to help visitors track peak fall color across Virginia.
“Fall is one of the most spectacular times to experience Virginia,” Virginia Tourism Corporation President and CEO Rita McClenny said. She said the site is intended to help visitors plan trips based on their interests, whether they are looking for wineries, downtown destinations, hiking or Virginia’s state parks.
The site also incorporates foliage reports and information from forestry experts to help travelers determine when and where fall colors are developing.
Virginia’s geography produces different foliage conditions and timing across the state, from the mountains of western Virginia to forests in the Piedmont and Tidewater regions.
State Forester Terry Lasher said the variety of trees and landscapes contributes to an extended and varied fall color season. Virginia forests include hickories and birches in mountain areas as well as tupelo and cypress trees farther east.
Virginia Department of Conservation and Recreation Director Nikki Rovner said fall is also one of the state park system’s major recreation seasons, with opportunities for hiking, camping and sightseeing as colors progress across the state.
Virginia has 44 state parks, with more than 1,800 campsites and 300 climate-controlled cabins.
