VERONA, Va. — The Blue Ridge Area Food Bank is calling on residents across western and central Virginia to donate, volunteer and advocate during Hunger Action Month as demand for food assistance reaches the highest level in the organization’s 45-year history.

The food bank is participating in the nationwide Feeding America campaign throughout September, with Hunger Action Day set for Sept. 29.

Over the past year, the Blue Ridge Area Food Bank and its network of more than 300 partner pantries and program sites distributed more than 33 million pounds of food, the equivalent of more than 27 million meals.

The organization said its network is now serving an average of 178,700 guest visits each month.

That figure is up about 4% from last year and represents the highest monthly average in the food bank’s history. Over the past four years, monthly guest visits have increased by about 40%, according to the organization.

“Across the Blue Ridge, the Food Bank and our partner network are seeing a higher need for food assistance than ever in our 45-year history,” CEO Kari Diener said.

The food bank serves 25 counties and eight cities from distribution centers in Charlottesville, Lynchburg and Winchester and its headquarters in Verona.

During Hunger Action Month, the organization is encouraging residents to contribute financially, volunteer at food distribution programs, advocate for hunger-relief policies and help raise awareness of food insecurity.

The food bank says a $1 donation can provide more than three meals.

It is also asking supporters to wear orange on Sept. 29 and share information about hunger through social media and conversations in their communities.

“Every action matters, whether it’s volunteering, speaking up, or giving,” Diener said. “Together, we can make our community stronger.”

The Blue Ridge Area Food Bank was founded in 1981 and is the largest hunger-relief organization serving western and central Virginia. It operates as part of the Feeding America network.
