MANASSAS, Va. — Two people were killed and a third was wounded Wednesday morning in a shooting at a United Rentals location in Manassas, according to the Manassas City Police Department.
Police said officers were called to the business at 9415 Wellington Road at 7:11 a.m. Sept. 30. Officers from Manassas City Police and the Prince William County Sheriff’s Office arrived about three minutes later and found three victims, who were given emergency medical aid and transported to a hospital.
Police identified the two people who died as Ricky Lamot, 48, and Christopher Serrano, 33. The third victim remained hospitalized in stable condition, according to the department.
Investigators identified the suspected shooter as Marvin Grant, 37, of Charlotte, North Carolina, who police said was an employee of United Rentals. Authorities said Grant left the scene in a silver Toyota Camry before officers arrived. Police said a motive had not been determined.
Detectives used location information from Grant’s cellphone, which was traced to Harrisonburg, and provided the information to Virginia State Police. State police were notified at approximately 8:20 a.m. that Grant might be in Rockingham County.
A state trooper later spotted Grant’s vehicle traveling south on Interstate 81 near mile marker 235 in Augusta County, according to police. The vehicle entered the rest area near mile marker 232, where troopers attempted to stop it. Police said Grant got out of the vehicle, returned to it and continued south on I-81, prompting a pursuit.
Near mile marker 227, Grant stopped along the interstate and got out of the vehicle with a firearm pointed at his head, police said. A Virginia State Police tactical team and negotiator were called to the scene. At approximately 10:30 a.m., Grant suffered what authorities described as a self-inflicted gunshot wound. He was transported to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
Virginia State Police said its personnel did not use force during the incident.
The shooting remains under investigation. Manassas police asked anyone with information to contact Detective Speights at 703-257-8041 or Detective Dranko at 703-257-8046.
Police said multiple agencies assisted with the investigation and response, including the Prince William County Sheriff’s Office, Virginia State Police, Manassas Park Police, Prince William County Police and Manassas City Fire and Rescue.
